About this title

Synopsis:

A comprehensive general reference on major American interest groups. This encyclopedia provides information on the lobbies and interest groups that dominate modern American politics. It provides descriptions of 13 categories of groups, followed by A-Z entries on the groups within that category.

From Booklist:

With the daily papers stuffed full of news and rumors about campaign finance, what could be more timely than a reference source on interest groups and lobbyists? This source lays bare the inner workings of almost 200 of them.Content is broken into 13 areas of activity under which lobbying groups are presented in alphabetical order. The areas of activity include "Banking, Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate," "Health and Medical," and "Civil Rights," among others. "Health and Medical" lists organizations such as the American Heart Association, American Nurses Association, and American Psychiatric Association. Similarly, "Civil Rights" covers the ACLU, Human Rights Watch, and the National Coalition for the Homeless. Single-issue groups like the Citizens Flag Alliance, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and Zero Population Growth are lumped together in a separate chapter. Also included is a "Foreign" section for groups like Cuban exiles and the European Union.Individual entries are divided into four subsections: introduction, history, activities, and financial facts. Together these subsections offer the researcher 1,500 to 2,000 words on each group. The introduction describes what the group is like today, the history portion explains its origins, and the activities part describes the group's current legislative and political agenda. The financial facts are often accompanied by a graph or chart. Brief bibliographies cite sources of information. Following the entries, more than 100 pages of tables and figures give information on 1997 to 1998 contributions from political action committees and on the lobbying expenses of the various interest groups. This section is followed by a directory of contact information, a glossary, an extensive bibliography organized by topic, and a detailed index. Two related titles should be noted as complements. Columbia Books' annual Washington Representatives is a directory of lobbyists, foreign agents, consultants, legal advisors, and various government representatives. Upon reading about the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union in Encyclopedia of Interest Groups, the researcher can look in Washington Representatives to find the names of specific individuals who serve as their lobbyists. Also worth mentioning is Congressional Quarterly's Open Secrets: The Encyclopedia of Congressional Money and Politics (1996), which is designed to let the user look up a specific legislator and learn from whom he or she is receiving contributions. This trio of books will work well together.Encyclopedia of Interest Groups is recommended for academic and public libraries. It is a solid reference work, virtually the only encyclopedia in this area, and it is very topical. REVWR
