Synopsis: A reference on global marketing, providing both an international perspective and detailed information on industry (as opposed to company) activity within individual nations. The articles cover the history, development, and current status of 115 international industries, including biotechnology, cable and other pay television services, commodity trading, computer software, engineering services, information retrieval services, motor vehicles and car bodies, pharmaceutical preparations, real estate, and telecommunications. Some 500 charts, tables, and graphs accompany the textual accounts, including company and country rankings. Includes industry, Harmonized System/SIC conversion, geographic, and general indexes. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
From Booklist: This new entrant into the international business-information arena provides detailed coverage of the history, development, and current status of 115 of "the world's most lucrative and high-profile industries." It is a complement to and overlaps somewhat with the two-volume Encyclopedia of American Industries [RBB Ap 15 95]. Industries covered include such broad categories as agriculture, computers, financial services, food, machinery, textiles, and transportation, which are further broken down. Some of the specific industries treated within the broad category of Chemical and Allied Industries, for example, include adhesives, biotechnology, medicinal and botanical products, paints, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and detergents. Among the surprising facts presented are that Mexico leads the world in the per capita consumption of Coca-Cola, that the average Finn drinks more than five cups of coffee per day, and that Switzerland is now only the third-largest watch-producing country. Overall arrangement is by broad category, augmented by a SIC Code index, a "Harmonized System/SIC Conversion Index" particularly helpful for commodities, a geographic index (by country and continent), and a general index that includes company names. Articles are signed, and credentials are given for the authors, most of whom are freelance writers. Each article is divided into sections, beginning with an "Industry Snapshot" that provides an overview of the industry and outlines the article to follow. "Organization and Structure" includes a brief discussion of how the industry is structured, including any regulations, treaties, or international agreements affecting the industry. "Background and Development" offers historical information (including relevant scandals), major products, and key legislation that shaped the industry. "Current Conditions" explains current economic status and challenges to the future of the industry. "Research and Technology" discusses major advances and the impact of "R&T" on the industry. The remainder of each article covers the work force, industry leaders, and information on the major countries involved in the industry. Many of the charts and graphs include dates and attribute sources in a footnote. Others appear to be compilations by the author based on information gathered from sources listed in the bibliographies provided at the end of each article, but this is not always clearly noted (e.g., "Leading Exporters of Kraft Linerboard" --no date or source provided). The bibliographies cite both popular magazines and trade journals. Coverage of industries is uneven in this work. For example, there are sections on leather glove production but nothing on shoes. Coverage of countries is inconsistent, too. For example, Turkey is a leading exporter of food products and textiles but is not mentioned in those articles. The work also has many typographical errors. But though the Encyclopedia of Global Industries is overpriced, it far surpasses the Department of Commerce's U.S. Global Trade Outlook 1995^-2000 (GPO, 1995) in scope and coverage. Recommended for comprehensive public and academic library business collections.
