About this title
Describes the delicate ecological balance among all living things on land, the damage done by humanity in contributing to the extinction of various species, and ways of preventing further harm. From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-9-- Earlier titles in this series each focused on a single issue, illustrating that our environmental problems all result from expanding human populations and excessive energy consumption. This volume is more generalized and lacks the cogency and clarity of the others. The lengthy discussion of Linnaean classification is confusing and of questionable value. "The Path to Extinction" chapter repeats information that precedes it. There are also errors. One picture caption states that "Dinosaurs ate either vegetation or other dinosaurs" and another makes it sound as though the Galapagos Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean. Barton's Vanishing Species (Gloucester, 1991) covers much of the same ground, but also addresses the disasterous consequences that would result from the extinction of specific terrestrial animals and plants, and offers the means of redressing the situation. However, its photographs are of poorer quality than those in Life on Land . Tesar's Endangered Habitats (Facts on File, 1991) is more detailed for a slightly older audience. --Meryl Silverstein, American Museum of Natural History, New York City
