About this Item

Folio. Book. lxiv + 375 pp. Profusely illustrated with black and white photos of grounds surrounding both great country seats as well as more bucolic thatched cottages. Like the other Country Life books authored by Tipping, this one captures a vanishing way of life, and there is a beauty and satisfaction to the black and white photos that can elude color photos. Above all else there is a meticulousness to the prose accompanying the photos that brings a rigor to the subject that is both accessible and yet raises this book from a trivil coffee table book. Gardening is treated not as a minor decorative art but as a glory of civilization, one of history and historical movement, and one deserving of serious contemplation. Minor soilage to green boards. Interior clean and tight. Overall at least very good in condition. The book is extra-heavy, weighing over seven pounds, and so extra shipping charges may have to be added, especially if shipped overseas. Bookseller Inventory # 000584

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
