Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition Thus. 'History of Signboards' first published in 1866. Large 8vo. pp. xv, [i], 336. 16pp. illustrations of Billheads. 64pp. illustrations of inn signs. Original publisher's red buckram with gilt pictorial vignette on upper cover lettered gilt on spine. Signed by W. E. Tate on the title-page. Tate is not credited on the title-page as requested by him (see below) but he has written his name in ink. Presentation copy: 'Professor W. K. Hancock With the author's compliments & kind regards.' Typed explanatory note at foot of front free endpaper which states, 'I wrote this long ago, when I was still schoolmastering. It was badly retyped by the publishers, and when they wouldn't let me have the time needful to revise it properly, I agreed they could see it through the press themselves - and keep my name off the title-page. (Hence such howlers as the heraldic one on p. 95). Imperfect as it is, I hope it's worth acceptance, and I'd like you to have this copy with my compliments and good wishes.' There were twelve earlier editions of this classic work, the last appearing in 1907. William Keith Hancock (1898 Ð 1988) was a distinguished Australian historian. William Edward Tate (1902 Ð 1968) was a teacher and historian. Light wear, otherwise a very good copy. Light wear otherwise very good. Signedes. Seller Inventory # C50454
