(Vol 1-2)xxxi+507 and 515 pp; (Vol 3-4) 521 and ix + 523 pp; (Vol. 5) ix + 569 pp. with bibliography, glossary, index of ballad titles, titles of books of ballads, index of matters and literature. Reiisue of this massive set originally published in 1882-1883 in a limited edition, considered since to be the definitive resource for all studies in this important area of English literature, folklore and balladry. Professor Child (and his post mortem successor G.L. Kittredge) included all of the then known versions of 305 ballads believed to be truly traditional; for each of the 305 ballads covered a full account of sources, prefactory historical information, scholarly textual analysis anda description of comparable foreign analogues are provided.
