About this Item

Weismann, August (1834-1914). Die Entstehung der Sexualzellen bei den Hydromedusen. 2 vols., 4to (text and atlas). xiii, [1], 295, [1]pp. (text); title-leaf plus 24 chromolithographed plates, each with printed key leaf (atlas). Jena: Gustav Fischer, 1883. 356 x 274 mm. Original printed wrappers, spines a bit chipped, light soiling. Occasional minor foxing, otherwise fine. First Edition. Weismann's most important contribution to biological thought was his theory of the continuity of the germ plasm (substance of heredity). Although others, such as Galton, had preceded Weismann in hypothesizing the continuity of hereditary substance, Weismann was the first to develop this idea into a coherent explanation of inheritance, and to bring it into conformity with new discoveries in cytology. Weismann found the best support for his theory in his studies of Hydromedusae, in which he followed the origin of the sexual cells through many generations; "his conclusions, as he traced the fate of the primitive germ cells and those after them, were strong evidence to Weismann that there was a continuity of the germ plasm" (DSB).
