About this Item

With title vignette, numerous text illustrations, and 4 full page plates, plus 32 pages of advertisements. Original cloth binding with exotic gilt design on cover and gilt lettering on spine; very occasional foxing, heavier on title page. Large bookplate of Norfolk & Norwich Library on paste-down, and an ownership signature on the flyleaf. First edition. Published anonymously, this first-person narrative recounts the career of a former Chaplain of the Church of England stationed in India. In addition to his missionary efforts, the author recorded a number of "exotic" events and encounters as seen through the eyes of a foreigner, aided by a number of wonderful images. Tinged with the unmistakable tone of European superiority, perhaps the most unsettling moment of all is his description of "purchasing children" from an aged Indian woman.
