About this Item

First edition. Hardcover in grey cloth. 205 pp. with index. Illustrated with photographic plates, diagrams of equipment. A tight, generally fine example, tiny hole in the front gutter. The follow up work continuing the author's 1898 "Principles and Practice of Hydrotherapy" . Simon Baruch (born in Prussia in 1855 but raised in the Carolinas), the brother of economist Bernard Baruch, was a pioneer in hydrotherapy in the United States. He began his career as a doctor in the Confederate Army and during the Civil War was captured twice by Union forces, the second time at Gettysburg where he had been ordered to stay behind to tend the wounded after Lee's withdrawal. He moved to New York City in 1881 (where he reportedly performed the first appendectomy in the U.S.) and became interested in public hygiene through the use of public baths and investigated the use of water-based treatments in medicine. Baruch died the year after the publication of this work. Bookseller Inventory # E17533
