An important early monograph on the mammals and amphibians of Brazil based on fieldwork by the author - many species new to science are described here. Karl Hermann Konrad Burmeister was a German zoologist, entomologist, herpetologist, and botanist. Burmeister was born in Stralsund, Germany and became a professor of Zoology at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg from 1837 to 1861. He traveled to Brazil from 1850 to 1852 and to Argentina from 1857 to 1860, returning to Germany with zoological collections. In the field of herpetology he described many new species of amphibians and reptiles (modified after Wiki). No ownership marks - a bookplate has been neatly removed from the front endpaper. Just a touch of soiling to the title page and to rear side of the final plate; a very bright and clean copy in near fine condition in an attractive new binding. Bookseller Inventory #
