About this Item

Original full tree calf withg spine loned in gilt and with black leather title label lettered in gilt. Frontis engraving of Schwenckfeld, 507 pp. (1). Text in old German. A tight example, recased at some point with new endpapers; egdes moderately rubbed and with scattered foxing to the text. Schwenckerfeld ( c. 1490-1561) was a German theologian and writer who became a Protestant reformer and spiritualist. He had a theological falling out with Luther in 1524 (Luther once called him "the poor simpleton"), developed his own view on the sacraments, and founded a small sect of followers (the sect was eventually outlawed). A century and a half after his death, his followers established their own church in Silseia; small groups of them emigrated to America, arriving in Philadelphia in 1731-37, forming the Society of Schwenckfelders in 1782. In 1909 the Schewnckfelder Church was formed and still exists today with five churches and only about 3000 members, all within southeastern Pennsylvania. Bookseller Inventory # ZE17432
