About this Item

Circa 1930, sized 9 x 12 inches, very sharp, clean, and bright. The subject, b. July 17, 1874, d. March 27, 1931, was President of Major League Baseball's American League from 1927 until his death March 27, 1931. He was born in West Columbia, West Virginia, moved to Delaware, Ohio, graduated from Otterbein College in 1895, and was football and baseball coach there until 1898. He moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he became secretary of the local Builders Exchange. He also coached football at Ohio Medical University . In 1900, he became sports editor for The Columbus Dispatch. He was hired in 1903 by the Cleveland Indians and acted as traveling secretary from 1903 - 08, then Vice President and General Manager, 1908 - 16, and 1918 - 22, and finally President, 1922 - 27, during which time he often acted as mediator between AL President Ban Johnson and Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. When AL owners removed Johnson in 1927, Barnard, as the league's founder, was chosen President. He was re-elected to a 3-year term on December 9, 1930, but died suddenly prior to an examination at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. A very nice piece of Baseball memorabilia.
