Folio (28.6 x 20.8 cm.), nineteenth-century (second quarter?) quarter sheep over marbled boards (joints defective and becoming loose from binding; rear free endleaf torn), flat spine with gilt fillets and lettering, text block edges sprinkled blue-green. Overall in good condition. Internally very good to fine. (18 ll.), 316 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this work in favor of the Benedictine Monks in their dispute with the Hieronymites over precedence in the processions of Corpus Christi and other religious ceremonies. This extensive and drawn out controversy gave rise to a number of books. Frei Manuel de Santo António (Lisbon, 1671-Coimbra 1749), a monk of the Benedictine Order, was Lente de Theologia at the Universidade de Coimbra and Rector of the colleges of his order both in Coimbra and Lisbon.A number of recorded copies appear to have one less preliminary leaf than the present copy. In all probability, these lack the half title, present in our copy.*** Barbosa Machado III, 180-1. Innocêncio V, 359-60 (giving the same collation as the present copy). Pinto de Matos (1970) p. 567.
