12mo (180 x 105mm). , iv-xli, , 487pp., , including half-title. Original marbled wrappers, edges uncut; (usual egdewear, some light toning, spine rubbed and ms. title partly effaced). Italian inscription on inner front wrap, "Si conosce benissimo da molte superficiali doctrine che l’Autore e un . studente." It seems to be a marking by a contemporary student reader doubting the doctrine of Dufour, although it is a bit curious as to why they wrote in Italian in a French publication. The thick codex is very well maintained in its original paper binding given this student use association. Dufour’s principal essay on the history of mental health, a pioneering work which garnered institutional interest in psychiatric treatments. In his principal work on psychiatry, Jean-François Dufour treats dementia, melancholia, mania, and hypochondria by synthesizing their disease characteristics and clarifying all the medical knowledge of the eighteenth century on these subjects. He accomplished this not only according to his personal interactions with patients (a forerunner of constructing clinical knowledge) but by applying theory. Dufour’s pioneering work was instrumental in acknowledging that there is a succession of ideas in connection with imagination, as well as, reinforced the importance of memory and communication of ideas within daily operations, Avoiding controversy on issues dear to the empiricists (Hume, Locke), as in, the question of the innate nature of certain ideas, Dufour preferred to focus on what makes the edge between perceptum and percipiens (the principle of feeling). He was responsible for introducing the idea of mechanical force weighing on the understanding; Dufour’s concepts were precursor to recent psychoanalytic teachings. Bookseller Inventory # D11184
