About this Item

Softbound. First French edition. Translated from the English by Gerard-Georges Lemaire. Important association copy with an exceptional inscription to his long-time friend and collaborator, Brion Gysin: "To Brion Gysin who picture wrote my literary career in France 25 years ago. William S. Burroughs." Burroughs and Gysin met in Morocco in the '50s, and shortly after lived at the Beat Hotel in Paris where they involved themselves with all manner of cutting edge experimentation including magnetic tape, computerized permutations, dream machines, the cut-up technique, trance inducement, and psychedelic drugs. Burroughs credits Gysin for inventing the cut-up method of composition that Burroughs used enthusiastically for the early part of his career. They remained close friends throughout their lives and their relationship has been extensively documented. Gysin's effect on Burroughs was probably best summarized by Burroughs himself when he said that Gysin was: "The only man that I've ever respected in my life. I've admired people, I've liked them, but he's the only man I've ever respected." A superb association to a close friend with a wonderful inscription invoking memories of their time together at the Beat Hotel. The only book from Burroughs to Gysin that we've handled. Fine.
