Essay on the Causes of the Variety of Complexion and Figure .
SMITH, SAMUEL STANHOPE. An Essay on the Causes of the Variety of Complexion and Figure in the Human Species . The Second Edition . Enlarged and Improved. New Brunswick: J. Simpson and Co., and Williams and Whiting, New York; L. Deare, printer, 1810. 411 p. Contemporary sheep (worn, spine breaking). The considerably revised second edition of Smith's important essay on race, in which he demonstrated, by means of natural philosophy and without recourse to scriptural authority, the truth of the Mosaic doctrine of a single creation. There is much emphasis on the Negro, as well as a 60-page appendix on the American Indian entitled "Of the Natural Bravery and Fortitude of the American Indians--or The History of their Manners as it relates to their Military Expeditions, and their Conduct to those who are Taken Captive in War." The first edition was published in Philadelphia in 1787. See Felcone, New Jersey Books, 1297. Bookseller Inventory # 3209
