3 hardcover volumes. Bound in full leather. Spines have gold gilt stamping and labels. Stated second American edition. A nice set of this rare, early Locke set. Leather on all three volumes is worn, including chipped crown/foot of the spines and some tears. See photos. Name of the previous owner, J. Mason, dated 1874 is written on the front free endpaper of all three books. Another previous owner, Taylor, wrote his name on the title page and first page of text in each book. No other marks or writing. The pages are toned from age. Includes: Volume 1. 328 pages. The page opposite the title page has been (mostly) torn out by someone. Volume 2. 368 pages. The foot of the spine is torn. Volume 3. 331 pages. Missing its spine label and the gilt has rubbed away. Front and back hinges are torn and the boards are loose. An Essay Concerning Human Understanding is one of John Locke s most famous works. First printed in the US in 1803, but readily available to the Colonists in English editions for a century.
