Larkins consists of full straight grain Morocco leather with five raised bands, compartmented, with titles and decorative designs gold-tooled on spine. The covers have triple-ruled border with tooled floral designs in each corner. The edges of the covers bear a single gilt line, the inner cover edges have wide gold-tooled dentelles, and the top page edges are gilded. Title page bears a pen-and-ink sketch of Cruikshank by F.W. Pailthorpe. The original 60 pages of text from Volume XXXIV, Number 1, of The Westminster Review contains 38 in-text reproductions of the artist's book illustrations. The extra illustrations inserted into the text and at the rear of the book number 113 full-page plates bearing 125 drawings by Cruikshank, including 44 hand-colored illustrations. All these extra illustrations are full pages excised from published books; the date of the published work, and often the name thereof, is penciled beneath the image (range: 1810 to 1870).
