About this Item

Octavo, nineteenth century polished calf gilt, joints cracked, gilt supralibros of the Signet Library on covers, few running titles, catchwords, and signature marks shaved, bottom blank edge of plate line of engraved frontispiece shaved, not touching any of Marshall's engraving of Statius, fine. Thomas Stephens was the translator, and appears to have been a highly regarded school master. Several of the many commendatory poems prefixed are by his former students. We trace no further publications or information about Stephens, and it is possible he was a casualty of England's troubled Civil War period. Wing S 5335; Grolier Club Wither to Prior, 821. The rare first edition in English. Because of the value of this item, extra postal insurance or registry fees may be required. Bookseller Inventory # 0951
