About this Item

The very rare first edition of Greenfield's anonymously published collection of essasys of his Edinburgh University lectures on emotional responses to literature. Octavo. vi, [2], 378, [2] pp. Original boards, leaves uncut. Upper cover and first signature detached but present. covers soiled spine rubbed and worn with chips to head and heal, partial remains of original paper label spine title. Light foxing, infrequent pencil marks, chiefly to rear pastedown, faint dampstaining to final 8 pages, a couple leaves with closed margin tears. Reprinted in 1813, this scarce first edition has shown no auction results recorded. William Greenfield was seriously disgraced in 1798, allegedly from having an affair with a male student. He fled Scotland where he had previously held the Regius Chair of Rhetoric and English Literature at Edinburgh University, one of the first University Chairs in English Literature in the world. This book of essays were written from his university lectures. Greenfield was a friend and colleague of both Robert Burns and Walter Scott and was even rumoured to have authored been the Waverly Novels in the literary press at the time. Rare.
