About this Item

The first American, from the third London, edition. Published in three volumes. Evans notes that it was first published in parts. Publication began in 1788 and finished in 1804. The frontispiece portrait of Rumfrod is signed by E.C. Trenchard and the plates in volume II by Samuel Hill. Rumford was a noteworthy man among men in his time. Born at Woburn, Massachusetts (1753) and named Benjamin Thompson at birth, during the Revolution he served as a Loyalist, rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel, and needless to say, resided in London (and on the continent) after the war. He was a physicist and inventor and a member of the new generation that in the late 18th and early 19th century challenged established physical theory and led a revolution in thinking about how thermodynamics works. In 1791 the king of Bavaria created him Count Rumsford for his work in reorganizing the army and his scientific and social work. Binding: Half red morocco by Stikeman. 8vo (22 cm; 8.75"). I: Frontis., xxiii, [1], 464 pp. II: [20], 196 pp., [3] ff., pp.199?310 (of 496), 8 (of 11) plates. Evans 34656 & 36251; ESTC W32062 & T97670; Sabin 95466; Rink, Technical Americana, 2899. Handsomely bound but incomplete set: volume II lacking all after p. 310 including 3 plates and no volume III present. Volume II issued without a title-page and a type facsimile supplied.
