About this title

It is quite in accordance with the humour of the great Aristophanes above us, beneath us, within us, without us, that an Irishman should write a book as characteristically English as Don Quixote is Spanish, and when the author of Esther Waters dedicates his work to another I rishman, it must be plain to all that he is holding the mirror up toN ature. But there is another reason why I should dedicate this book to you. You are an I rish Protestant like myself, and you could always love I reland without hating England and .B ut I am past my patience trying to find logic in a dedication which is an outburst of friendly feeling for an old friend. It would be pleasant to look down the last Jive-and-twenty years, but I will look no further than yester-year, when we were engaged in trying to wheedle theE nglish public into accepting the only solution (yours) of the I rish difficulty a line of railway linking a western harbour with a northern tunnel joining I reland to Scotland. We failed, of course, in practical result (the official mind repels reason), but our adventure was not without moral gain, for two Irishmen did set out to strike a blow for I reland without coming to blows.

About the Author:

About the Author Irish novelist George Augustus Moore (1852 – 1933) wrote short stories and books in addition to being a poet, art critic and dramatist. He studied art in Paris during the 1870s and befriended many of leading French artists and writers. He was one of the first English-language authors to absorb the wisdom of French realists, and was particularly influenced by Émile Zola. His work influenced James Joyce, according to biographer Richard Ellmann. Moore's books are outside the mainstream of Irish and British literature and he is sometimes regarded as the first great modern Irish novelist.
