Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex relationship between wit, virtue, and societal expectations in Elizabethan England. The story unfolds through the adventures of Euphues, a young Athenian gentleman, as he navigates the decadent world of Naples. The author uses Euphuesââ ⢠experiences to explore themes of friendship, love, education, and religion, providing a nuanced commentary on the values and social mores of the time. Through the dialogue between Euphues and a wise old man, the book examines the pitfalls of unchecked wit, and the dangers of indulging in worldly pleasures. The author also provides a deeper exploration of the concept of friendship, emphasizing its importance as a cornerstone of a virtuous life, a theme that resonates throughout the work. Ultimately, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into Elizabethan society, exploring the tensions between individual ambition and societal expectations, and the ongoing pursuit of virtue in a world that often celebrates the superficial. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the origins of Euphuism, the ornate rhetoric made famous by John Lyly in his novel Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit (1578). It has long been assumed that Lylyâs elaborate prose style was modelled on that of classical orators such as Cicero and Isocrates. However, the author argues that medieval Latin prose, which made extensive use of sound patterns and rhetorical schemes, played a more significant role in the development of Euphuism. By comparing examples from Lyly's work with passages from medieval sermons, chronicles, and devotional texts, the author demonstrates the striking similarities between the two styles. This book challenges the traditional view of Euphuism's origins and sheds new light on the literary and intellectual currents that shaped one of the most distinctive and influential styles in English literature.
