About this Item

p/b 287 pages. condition is good. In her preface to what is, in effect, a history of Europe in her own time, Elizabeth Wiskemann disclaims any pretence to detachment. Indeed, if she did not she would be, in Aristotle's expressive phrase, either a wild beast or a god. Unlike any other author in this series, she has seen and heard her principal characters in the flesh and has watched the most horrifying and dramatic period of all European history rise to its climax. To the interpretation of the immense mass of documents she can bring the insights of first-hand knowledge. Readers of her Rome-Berlin Axis (now available in a revised edition) need not be reminded of how, without any sacrifice of scholarship, she succeeds in bringing the people and the period to life. This is the Europe that began with the high hopes of the League of Nations and ended with mindless destruction. The Europe of Briand and Stresemann becomes the Europe of Hitler and Stalin, of Laval and Mussolini. The economic recovery of the early twenties falters and fails before the slump. Mass unemployment, totalitarianism and the unspeakable barbarity of the Nazis sweep in an obliterating tide over a Europe which has come to accept the inevitability of war.
