About this Item

**** [ INTERNATIONAL {Non-USA & NON-Canada} ORDERS = SURFACE ONLY Please; SORRY, NO overseas AIRMAIL Orders will be accepted on this HEAVY Magazine]; **** 316 pages. "The 5. SS-Panzer-Division "Wiking" (Viking) was one of the elite divisions of the Waffen-SS. It was also one of the most unique divisions of World War II as volunteers no less than eight European nations, including Danes, Norwegians, Finns and stonians, served with Wiking. However, the majority of the members of the division wereGerman nationals. Initially formed as a motorized infantry division in 1940, Wiking was upgraded to SS-Panzergrenadier-Division "Wiking" in November 1942 and finally designated as 5. SS-Panzer-Division "Wiking" in 1943. Wiking spent the entire war on the Eastern Front where it rapidly established a reputation as one of the hardest fighting divisions of the German army. The division fought in many of the hardest battles of the campaign, including: Rostov, Kharkov, the Cherkassy pocket, Warsaw and Hungary. .At the time of the surrender in Europe Wiking was steadfastly holding its defensive positions in Austria. Despite the lack of surviving wartime records, Peter Stassner, himself a veteran of the division, has produced a well-researched book with many dramatic personal accounts of the fighting. The text is supplemented by numerous very good maps and over one-hundred contemporary photographs. An excellent divisional history of one of the best fighting units, Allied or Axis, of the Second World War." ** many PHOTO's & illustrations; >>> weight = 825 grams. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
