About this Item

With an Introduction by Austin Dobson and Illustrations by Hugh Thomson. London: Macmillan, (1925). Octavo, beautifully bound by Riviere and Sons in full blue polished calf, the covers framed in a double gilt fillet, the spine elaborately gilt, with red and brown leather titling pieces, all edges gilt, gilt dentelle turn-ins, and marbled endleaves. 477 pages. A fine copy in an elegant gift binding, with original cloth slip case. Evelina was Burney's first novel, published anonymously in in 1778, enjoying a huge success, and even winning the praises of the redoubtable Dr. Johnson. Burney (1752-1840) was one of the few women admitted into the literary circle that included Johnson, Garrick, Burke, and many other brilliant individuals. Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) was a Irish-born artist who first rose to prominence with his series of drawings of 18th century ballads and stories in The English Illustrated Magazine, 1883. An instinctive artist with little formal training, he became one of the most popular illustrators of his day, and his idyllic world of stage-coaches, sedan chairs, and English scenes found their way into the novels of Jane Austen, Fanny Burney, Mrs. Gaskell and Charles Reade, as well as scores of popular color-plate books in the first fifteen years of the twentieth century.
