The writer, bookseller and satirist William Hone "was a thoroughly honest and conscientious man, and deserves to be remembered for his sacrifices on behalf of the freedom of the press and cheap literature." (DNB) His victorious court battle against government censorship in 1817 marked a serious turning point in the fight for British press freedom. The present works, the first of which is dedicated to Charles Lamb, were warmly commended by Lamb, Scott, and Robert Southey, who remarked that he had not seen any miscellaneous books that were so well worth having.
