Synopsis: Accelerated Reader is a program based on the fact that students become more motivated to read if they are tested on the content of the books they have read and are rewarded for correct answers. Students read each book, individually take the test on the computer, and receive gratification when they score well. Schools using the Accelerated Reader program have seen a significant increase in reading among their students.
This collection of high/low titles serves as a rich resource for your at-risk teens. With the test disk, it also provides an opportunity to reinforce your students' understanding of the material.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 5 Up-Osborn defines bias-related incidents and crimes, and provides examples of them from the past and present. He describes prejudice as a learned attitude, and suggests that when group allegiance is taken to be group superiority, the results can be negative. He cites wartime tensions and economic insecurity as other factors that set the stage for bias incidents. A chapter is devoted to hate groups active in the U.S., including the Ku Klux Klan, the White Aryan Resistance, and the Aryan Nations. A valuable chapter on instances of government-sponsored hate crimes deals with Russian pogroms, Armenian massacres, Nazis, and ethnic cleansing in Bosnia. The author suggests contacting defense agencies and organizations for information and assistance. This title delivers a potent message in a straightforward, easy-to-grasp manner. Appropriate black-and-white and full-color photographs illustrate the easy-to-read, large-print text. The book will be useful for reports and for readers who wish to understand the dynamics of modern society. However, statistics lack source references. Barbara Moe's Coping with Bias Incidents (Rosen, 1993) attempts to cover the same ground, but falls short in terms of organization and impact.
