About this title

Synopsis:

Examines the history and evolution of family court, as well as the continuing debate over the treatment of juveniles in the U.S. legal system.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 6 Up-Bianchi addresses the legal treatment of juveniles, with special attention to those accused of violent crimes. She recounts the history of the family court system, which was established at the behest of progressive forces to protect children and youth. The operations of the institution are presented in detail. Family court has traditionally stressed the "rehabilitation model," which focuses on the social causes of crime such as poverty and child abuse in dealing with offenders. The author is passionate in her support of this approach. She believes that the opposing "punishment model" cannot be effective. Since a combination of both models is usually followed, the argument is moot. Although it is somewhat of a digression, a section of the text is devoted to an attack on capital punishment. This work will be useful for reports, although the style is dry and the author's insistence on aggressively pressing her views verges on propaganda. Jeffrey Margolis's Teen Crime Wave (Enslow, 1997) also traces the workings of the juvenile justice system and is more accessible.
