About this Item

vii, [3], 91 p.: 1 full-page and many in-text illustrations; 24 cm. Red cloth spine; salmon paper over boards. Black cover title. Bookplate of the Washington County Historical Society on back fixed endpaper. Small paper labels on spine and front board. Three-digit number in ink at lower edge of p. [iii]. In 1869 the author, Franklin Leonard Pope (1840-1895), formed a company with Thomas Edison -- Pope, Edison & Company Electrical Engineers -- which developed the one-wire telegraph known as the stock ticker. Pope himself received several patents for electrical inventions. The first edition of his history of the invention of the electric incandescent light bulb appeared in 1889. The Second Edition incorporates several decisions made in federal courts after the first edition came out. Includes a chronology of the modern incandescent lamp from 1845 to 1889, and an index. Pope stated "the one essential element which differentiates the successful modern incandescent lamp from its unsuccessful predecessors is the arch shaped illuminant of cellular organic material," for which William Edward Sawyer and Albon Man should receive credit. The Second Edition contains material not found in the first edition and is much scarcer. In Very Good Condition: corners and edges of boards are rubbed; boards are soiled along edges; pages are clean and tight. Bookseller Inventory # 004362
