In this book, Thurgood Marshall tells us about liberal ideology, and in the introduction, Archibald Cox sees the origins of the other side. But most of the essays (six of them by present and past Supreme Court Justices, Harry A. Blackmun, William J. Brennan, Abe Fortas, Goldberg, John Paul Stevens, and Marshall) present puzzling questions: What role do state constitutions play in civil rights? How does one weigh judicial efficiency? What does "speech" mean in "freedom of speech?" One cannot easily predict on which side a judicial "liberal" or "conservative" will land. Strongly recommended for public and academic libraries.
