About this Item

First edition. A history of the reign of Charles II, this is the author's rejoinder to vol. III of the Complete History of England by White Kennet (1706). "Like the other works of the same author, the Examen is valuable for the => many original anecdotes it contains, and the view it presents of party politics, but as an impartial authority it cannot be relied on" (Lowndes); Allibone confirms, "We cannot say we should propose Roger North as a model for the biographer to imitate; but he had the advantage of the strictest and most confidential intimacy with the subjects of his pen. . . ." Published posthumously, North's Examen is divided into three parts with an essay at the end, "Reflections upon . . . Mr. LeClerc's Life of Mr. John Locke," preceding an index. An engraved frontispiece portrait of the author by Vertue introduces the text, which is printed in roman and italic with sidenotes throughout and a woodcut tailpiece at the conclusion of each part. Large 4to (25.7 cm, 10.125"). Frontis. port., [8] ff., 692 pp., [12] ff. ESTC T147677; Lowndes 1703; Allibone 1436; DNB (North). Contemporary speckled calf covers double-ruled in gilt around covers, board edges gilt, spine with raised bands gilt-accented with author and title gilt, edges speckled red; scuffed, bumped, joints cracking but holding. Minor worming in margins, worsening in the upper margin of one hundred or so leaves, light waterstaining in upper margin of same one hundred or so leaves and very minor foxing in outer margin of a few quires.
