Book Description Arts Council, London, first edition, 1953, 1953. Printed wrappers, tall 8vo, 48 pp. 67 entries. Useful for the very good annotations. Introduction by Wilfrid Blunt. "As Mr. Stearnís descriptive notes in this catalogue show, there exists a very close connexion in their earlier stages between medicine, pharmacy and botanical illustration. The authors of many of the books here exhibited were medical men by profession, though much of their time was devoted to, and their most memorable successes achieved in the field of botany. Although the books here displayed have been selected purely for their artistic merit, many have an added medicinal interest. Moreover they show the delightful way in which much valuable information about plants and their uses was recorded and handed down to us; information that formed the basis of modern botany and contributed both directly and indirectly to pharmacy and medicine. .anyone who studies this exhibition with attention will be able to form a very fair picture of the progress of botanical illustration through the last five hundred years. Almost every known method of reproduction has at one time or another been employed: the humble woodcut, plain or hand-coloured; the more delicate etching and engraving; stipple, mezzotint, aquatint and lithography. More recently, the endless resources of mechanical reproduction have been called upon." Wrappers browned and torn at foot of spine, name and address label on front free endpaper.
