About this title

Synopsis:

First edition. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket.

From Library Journal:

Lean, lucid prose and subdued, contemplative ambience distinguish this novel about a Vietnamese professional soldier in exile. Sgt. Nen joined the army at age 15, fought for the French, then the Americans, and subsequently escaped to the United States just prior to the fall of Saigon. Now efficient headwaiter at his brother-in-law's successful Vietnamese-French restaurant in Arlington, Virginia, Nen spends his free time visiting Civil War battlefields and reenacting battles. As the details of his familial and military background unfold, they clarify his isolation, his tendency to act according to instinct, and his hatred of human parasites. Utilizing uncomplicated action and few characters, Fleming focuses on human growth. Recommended for larger collections. Rex E. Klett, Anson Cty. Lib., Wadesboro, N.C.
