A wonderfully bound copy of J. R. Seeley's two important lectures on the British Empire and its expansion in the Victorian era. Bound in a prize binding from Bristol Grammar School. A reprint. First published in 1883. Two lectures of John Robert Seeley discussing the growth of the British Empire in the Victorian era. In this work, Seeley argues that the expansion of Britain's Empire was based on its defeat of Louis XIV's France back in the eighteenth century. Interestingly he also states that holding onto India might not be beneficial to England in the long run. With a prize bookplate to the front paste down, now covered with the pictorial bookplate of Alexander Stone, a Scottish banker and philanthropist, and the namesake of the Sir Alexander Stone building at Glasgow University. Bound in a full calf prize binding. Externally, lovely, with a little rubbing to the spine tail and extremities. Spine is a touch faded. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound with bright, clean pages. Very Good Indeed.
