About this Item

Printed wrappers. 36 pp. Title page printed in red and black.; Transcription of a paper read before the Maryland Historical Society by John Austin Stevens (Librarian of the New York Historical Society) dealing with a little known action during the Revolutionary War in the Southern theatre in 1781. Based on papers left by a Stevens ancestor who was an artillery commander, this monograph describes the background and result of an inconclusive action near Portsmouth, Virginia between a force dispatched from New Jersey under the command of Lafayette and troops commanded by Benedict Arnold, who had been granted a commission in the British Army after his betrayal of the Americans at West Point.
