With 14 engraved plates (many folding). Original printed wrappers. First edition, first printing of the author's Bakerian Lecture, his last contribution to the Royal Society. Here Faraday describes optical investigations on very thin films of gold and on ruby-coloured suspensions of ultra-microscopic particles of gold in various liquids. The importance of Faraday's observations on the conception of colloid chemistry was not fully realized until about forty years later.
