(First 2 of 3 parts). Tall 4to. [vi], xx, [2], 367, [1]; [x], 520 pp. Vol. Part II Errata (inserted in front of B1). Front free end-papers loose with extremities chipped both vols. Contemporary half calf over leather, 5 raised bands; worn, all covers detached, spine ends missing pieces, paper labels to spine feet, first 6 ff. stained at gutter (possible leather preservative or similar substance). Theological Institute of Connecticut blind-stamps to first and last few pages both vols. As is. Lacking Pt. III, Containing an Explication of the Lord's Prayer, with an Introduction, and Appendix to it. First part is a second edition (unstated, first issued 1678), second part is the third edition corrected (stated, first issued 1680 & 1681). On Pt. II: "Gabriel Towson, formerly a fellow of All Souls and later a Hertfordshire rector, also wrote a moderating analysis of the Ten Commandments which he published the year after Durham's book appeared [Durham, James, The Law Unsealed, or a Practical Exposition of the Ten Commandments, Edinburgh, 1676]. Towerson dedicated his study to the archbishop of Canterbury and as expected championed an orthodox Anglican approach" (Katz, p. 113). Towerson was an English clergyman who studied at All Souls' College and published nine theological works before his death.
