Book Description John Henry Nash, San Francisco, 1938. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. Limited Edition. One of 650 copies, quarto size, 36 pp. The Exposition printed here is an effort by Carlos Antonio Carrillo (1783-1852), Governor of Alta California, to save the California Pious Fund for its original purpose: to fund Jesuit missionaries in California. After the United States acquired California from Mexico, the government wanted to sell the properties of the Fund and put the earnings in the National Treasury; Carrillo strongly opposed this plan, and this book is a printing of his speech made before the Chamber of Deputies, in an attempt to save the missionaries and continue their work in California. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter dark green cloth with green paper boards, white paper spine label with black lettering and ruled borders, black-and-white decorative headpieces throughout; Van Gelder hand-made paper, quarto size (11" by 7.75"), pagination: [i-iv] v-xx [1-2] 3-15 [1 colophon], one of 650 copies, unnumbered. In a dark green paper dust wrapper, with black lettering on the spine. ___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; extremely minor rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, with some slight soiling on the front free endpaper, else fine. The dust wrapper is near fine, with some slight soiling to the back cover, else fine. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
