About this title

Synopsis:

"Dynamism and a thrusting, angular style are the characteristic features of the Expressionist contribution to book illustration (in which are included portfolios issued in limited editions and works reproduced in periodicals). Although many of the publications were of an essentially ephemeral nature (as a result of which some Expressionist illustrations are probably lost for ever), there is both an essential stylistic consistency and a wide variation in the form, intellectual content and techniques employed. Extremes of treatment are seen in the etchings of Max Pechstein, faithfully following the chosen text, and in the woodcuts of Hans Schmidt-Rottluff who ruthlessly subordinated the text to his own ideas; also in the essentially linear style of Oskar Kokoschka and Paul Klee, compared with the richly coloured woodcuts (notably those illustrating Peter Schlemihl) of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The woodcut - having recently been brought back into fashion by the artists of Die Brücke - was especially important as a medium for the Expressionists, providing them with the opportunity to integrate text and illustration or a title-page design, while a few artists carefully combined typographical design with their illustrations to form a harmonious combination; most frequently, however, illustrations were whole pages, independent but closely related to the text or to its spirit. This, the first major study of Expressionist book illustration, includes an extensive bibliography in which the work of over 150 artists is listed, and the illustrations include examples of the work of every major figure in the movement. The author discusses all of these, placing them in the troubled political and historical context of the period, including the First World War and its aftermath."
