4to. 31.5 by 26.5 cm. 56 leaves, or about 110 pages, chock-a-block with content -- invitations, photos, cards, newspaper and other clippings, original drawings and inked captions. With a few blank leaves, but overall, this scrap book reads as very complete. The album was kept by adolescent then young adult sisters, and it offers a rich chronicle of growing up as popular, upper middle class girls in a small city of the day. In some respects the scrapbook is entirely ordinary -- the sisters show no evidence of great artistic or literary talent. Yet in its neatness, its thoroughness and general organization the resulting album is far more satisfying than most of the genre, and it serves as a great time capsule relic of small town/city life for such lives owing to the ease of perusal. One wonderful aspect of the scrap book is that it truly ushers us into the lives of its compilers, and we can experience their pleasures, excitements and small triumphs in the same order as they did. Their frequent hand-written captioning lifts the many disparate items from vagueness to things that form a real narrative, plus we do not have to guess at the why and what these events and things meant to the girls. So here one will find stuff about boyfriends, crushes on Rudolph Valentino and John Barrymore, and admiration for Adolph Menjou (a Silent leading man before he later became a prolific featured and more character actor in the Sound era), girl scout camp memorabilia, dances, song lyrics, card games, theater-going and threatricals, social outings (picnics, country car excursions), charity events, school graduations, literary efforts (poetry, essays), etc. There is material on Woodrow Wilson, Warren B. Harding and Alfred Smith, but for the most part, the girls' world appears to have been sheltered and insulated from the tumult of the outside world. In our view, once again, what makes this so extraordinary is the ordinariness of the lives being documented. Light wear to the leaves' edges. Leaves slightly brittle. Bookseller Inventory #
