Synopsis: The authors have presented more than a brief compilation of the events leading to the formation of one of the last medical schools in the United States. This volume examines the relationship of the Texas Tech University School of Medicine to national trends in the development of medical school and to the ferment in medical education theories, as well as exploring the impact of such an institution on its immediate locale. Eye of the Storm is the story of a group of determined people attempting to create a medical school to alleviate the physician shortage in West Texas and to improve medical care in the most medically underserved area of Texas, in addition to advancing medical education. It explores the role played by politics in the school's design, the difference between what was perceived as possible and the reality of educating students, the influence locally of the medical profession on the school, and the interaction of the medical school with Texas Tech University, all projected against the background of the vast area comprising West Texas. In their research into the school's beginnings, the authors utilized not only an impressive list of original primary sources but also the reminiscences of those involved, which serve to breathe life into the narrative. The work is, as are most chronicles of medical history, a tale of success and failure, of triumph and despair-basically, a story of people doing the best they can at the time.
