About this Item

This is a hardcover first edition copy in brown cloth with stamped design, typical of the mid 1800s. The spine back strip has a 1 inch chip at the top. The gold spine lettering is faded to barely legible. Otherwise a VG, tight unmarked copy, no foxing, 419 pages, plus a 16 page Ticknor & Fields catalog at the rear. Inscribed on the f.f.e.p., in pencil: "Mrs. Kennan From her friend, the Author, Nov. 6, 1862, Brooklyn". And below this is another pencil inscription by a previous owner. This book was from the author's mega-Plymouth Church days in Brooklyn Heights. This book is a series of essays taken from the New York Leger and the New York Independent, for which Ward was the editor. The author was much better known than his sister who wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. Bookseller Inventory # 043524

Store Description

The Reader's Corner is such fun,it's too bad you have to buy our books on line. We have eight foot tall outside bookshelves across the entire front of the store. There is a money slot in the door for night sales, which go to support National Public Radio. Inside, which can be too crowded at times, are surprisingly good books, only 1% are ever listed on-line. We also sell records, music cd's, comic books, mags, computer software and games. Best of all is the found art decorating every spare spot. The motto on the front door: NO SHOOTING, NO SMOKING, NO MOONING THE MANAGEMENT.
