Description:

Griffiths, Major Arthur George Frederick (1838-1908). FAST AND LOOSE. A novel in Three Volumes. London: Chapman & Hall, 1885. Original olive green diagonal fine-ribbed publisher's cloth. Near Fine, bright copy of this very scarce Victorian three-decker mystery novel. The two inner hinges of Volume One are cracked, and all three volumes are slightly rubbed and cocked, but a superior set with eye appeal and a most compelling title and plot. Griffiths was a rather infamous prison administrator and author who published over 60 books during his lifetime. Some of his accounts of crime and punishment in England have been noted as "sensational and grotesque" -- designed to appeal to the baser fascinations of his Victorian readers. FAST AND LOOSE, a suspenseful mystery dealing with a bank robbery, was his most famous title and remains his most desirable first edition. This is only the second copy we've handled in the last two decades. Wolff 2803. Not in Sadleir. Bookseller Inventory #
