Description:

1st Printing. Signed. 406 pages. Published in 2009. The author's second novel. Limited Edition of 4000 signed copies, as stated. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition. The Limited Edition is now scarce. What sets the Collector's Edition apart is that in terms of production values, it is superior in every respect to the trade. The concept and design elements are by Audrey Niffenegger herself. In stark contrast to the bright, tin-foil sheen of the trade edition, the author/artist has adopted an austerely elegant black/white/red color scheme that emphasizes the novel's creepiness: Black cloth boards with red titles embossed on spine; black gilt page edges; and a pictorial DJ design that is based on an original bird painting by Niffenegger. The six black birds ("Six for Death") as well as the titles on the cover and spine are "de-bossed", resulting in one of the most stunningly beautiful DJ designs we have ever seen. The text is printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Presents, in a Collector's Edition format, Audrey Niffenegger's "Her Fearful Symmetry". The title is taken from William Blake's "The Tyger", one of the greatest poems in the English language: "Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright / In the forests of the night, / What immortal hand or eye, / Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?". It is her most fully realized work in the Romantic/Gothic vein that characterizes her art as well as her prose. "The endurance of love animates this story set in Highgate Cemetery London. When Elspeth Noblin dies of cancer, she leaves her estate, including an apartment overlooking the graveyard, to the twin daughters of her twin sister, from whom she has been estranged for twenty years. When Valentina and Julia show up to claim their inheritance, they soon discover that Elspeth is still in residence, in ghostly form. Niffenegger has a knack for taking the Romantic into the realm of creepiness, and she constructs a taut mystery around the secrets to be found in Elspeth's diaries and the lengths to which she will go to reunite with her younger lover. It's no small achievement that the revelations are both organic and completely unexpected" (The New Yorker Magazine). Readers who fell in love with her breakthrough debut, "The Time Traveler's Wife", will be spellbound again. "Beautiful prose. Literature that will last" (The Denver Post). An absolute "must-have" edition for Audrey Niffenegger collectors. This copy is one of the Collector's Edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the publisher's tipped-in page by Audrey Niffenegger. It is also very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page itself by the author. The title-page signature was obtained in person through Niffenegger's Chicago gallery signing. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such double-signed copy of the Collector's Edition available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: All other copies of the Collector's Edition available online are signed on the tipped-in page only. It is offered at the publisher's original list price. A rare signed copy thus. One of the finest American artist/writers of our time. A flawless copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER AUDREY NIFFENEGGER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1439165947. Bookseller Inventory # 15124

Synopsis: Four thousand copies of this signed limited Collector's Edition with a cover painting by the author and special design elements were printed in September 2009.

Audrey Niffenegger's spectacularly compelling second novel opens with a letter that alters the fate of every character. Julia and Valentina Poole are semi-normal American twenty-year-olds with seemingly little interest in college or finding jobs. Their attachment to one another is intense. One morning the mailman delivers a thick envelope to their house in the suburbs of Chicago. From a London solicitor, the enclosed letter informs Valentina and Julia that their English aunt Elspeth Noblin, whom they never knew, has died of cancer and left them her London apartment. There are two conditions to this inher- itance: that they live in it for a year before they sell it and that their parents not enter it. Julia and Valentina are twins. So were the estranged Elspeth and Edie, their mother.

The girls move to Elspeth's flat, which borders the vast and ornate Highgate Cemetery, where Christina Rossetti, George Eliot, Radclyffe Hall, Stella Gibbons and Karl Marx are buried. Julia and Valentina come to know the living residents of their building. There is Martin, a brilliant and charming crossword-puzzle setter suffering from crippling obsessive compulsive disorder; Marijke, Martin's devoted but trapped wife; and Robert, Elspeth's elusive lover, a scholar of the cemetery. As the girls become embroiled in the fraying lives of their aunt's neighbors, they also discover that much is still alive in Highgate, including -- perhaps -- their aunt.

Author of one of the most beloved first novels in recent years, Niffenegger returns with an unnerving, unforgettable and enchanting ghost story, a novel about love and identity, secrets and sisterhood and the tenacity of life -- even after death.

Review: Amazon Best of the Month, September 2009: Following her breakout bestseller, The Time Traveler's Wife, Audrey Niffenegger returns with Her Fearful Symmetry, a haunting tale about the complications of love, identity, and sibling rivalry. The novel opens with the death of Elspeth Noblin, who bequeaths her London flat and its contents to the twin daughters of her estranged twin sister back in Chicago. These 20-year-old dilettantes, Julie and Valentina, move to London, eager to try on a new experience like one of their obsessively matched outfits. Historic Highgate Cemetery, which borders Elspeth's home, serves as an inspired setting as the twins become entwined in the lives of their neighbors: Elspeth's former lover, Robert; Martin, an agoraphobic crossword-puzzle creator; and the ethereal Elspeth herself, struggling to adjust to the afterlife. Niffenegger brings these quirky, troubled characters to marvelous life, but readers may need their own supernatural suspension of disbelief as the story winds to its twisty conclusion. --Brad Thomas Parsons
