About this Item

1940, xv, 115pp, paper covered boards and cloth backstrip. Corners worn through, moderate wear elsewhere, contents G. The first edition was 1814. It was said by Howes (L-378) to be the first humorous book produced west of the Alleghanies. That may well be true; however, it was also generally thought to be the first book printed in Louisville. That is incorrect. As of the time of this writing, that honor belongs to a book printed in 1803 in Louisville, written by Richard Dickinson, entitled AN ADDRESS TO JUDGE INNES, SOLE AND ABSOLUTE JUDGE, IN ALL CASES TO THE AMOUNT OF TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS; AND TO THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Littell's satirical, EPISTLES OF WILLIAM, SURNAMED LITTELL, had been published at Frankfort, KY in 1806, and was later included in FESTOONS. Coincidentally, the copy that sold at the Streeter Sale, (1648), had the signature of the aforementioned Judge Innes on the title page, so he is associated with the first two books (again, as of this writing) printed in Louisville. See also Jillson, p. 52; Coleman 2718; Kentucky Rarities 78; Graff 2508. This book had belonged to Elmer Adler, the founder of Pynson Printers in New York City, with his signature.
