About this Item

8.5" x 11" typescript (computer word-processor-generated, almost certainly daisy wheel) on perforated printer paper. Minor creasing to some pages. A bit of toning overall. Remnants of a smoky smell (both Anthony and his wife were smokers). Two small corrections to the text, presumably by Anthony, else clean throughout. Very good plus to near fine. [2], 237, [1]. The complete typescript and author's note for Anthony's 1990 young-adult sci-fi novel BALOOK, the publisher's copy sent by Anthony to his publisher Underwood-Miller who brought the novel out in 1990. Published the same year as Michael Crichton's JURASSIC PARK, Anthony's story also revolves around the genetic resurrection of an extinct dinosaur. A coming-of-age story of sorts comparing the maturation of the Baluchitherium "Balook" with that of his young friend Thor. Perhaps most noteworthy, however, for Anthony's "Author's Note" which closes the book (as well as the manuscript here). It recounts BALOOK's long and circuitous road to publication and remains one of Anthony most concentrated and sustained pieces on the science fiction genre, his working methods, and the writer's craft. It ends, appropriately enough, thusly: "I mentioned word processing programs. I had discovered one called Finalword that promised to be even better for me than my prior ones [.] But it was complex, and not perfectly adapted to me system or my Dvorak keyboard; it would be a monster to break in. So I decided to use [.] a short novel to break it in; once I have novelized a thing, I really understand it [.] The available novel was Balook." In other words, THIS typescript. Store Description

I focus on intrinsically interesting, important, or unusual books in all fields. Specialties include popular culture; esoterica; modern & contemporary literature; John Steinbeck; The Beat & NY schools; poetry & small press; the avant-garde; little magazines & lit. journals (especially those associated with the Mimeo Revolution); manuscripts & archives; literary ephemera; Americana; as well as vernacular, folk, and outsider books of all kinds. A sense of the eclecticism I strive for can be seen in some of material I've recently handled. From an illuminated 15th-century manuscript Book of Hours to a collection of photographs and collages by Beat great William S. Burroughs, from a Yosemite tourist album containing some of the earliest images of a Sierra Club expedition to an important archive of letters from writer Henry Miller to his agent, I seek material that will fascinate and endure. I am always looking to purchase fine books in any of my areas of interest, from single titles to collections. Please inquire. Search and want services are available, as are appraisals and collection development. For three years I maintained an open shop in Monterey, CA (formerly the Cannery Row Old Book Co.). I now work in the Washington DC area and maintain office space in downtown Silver Spring MD. I am open by chance or appointment. I also exhibit regularly at book fairs around the country. Please check my website for upcoming events. To date, I've issued five catalogues of rare books. Copies may be downloaded on my website (briancassidy.net). Print copies may also be requested. Please email to be added to our mailing list.
