About this Item

BIENEK, Horst. THE FIRST POLKA [Der Erste Polka]. [A Novel] [By] Horst Bienek. Translated by Ralph R. Read. Octavo, glossy pictorial wrappers (front cover design by Tom Cervenak and reproducing a drawing on rear cover by David Hockney), pp. 326, [i]; revised English translation by Ralph R. Read (of 'Der Erste Polka' by Horst Bienek). Inscribed and signed by Horst Bienek: "Cordially/ Horst Bienek/ New Orleans, La. 1985" (on title page). German novelist, poet and journalist Horst Bienek was born in Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia in 1930; he studied in Berlin with Bertolt Brecht at the Berliner Ensemble, was arrested in East Berlin in 1951, and spent four years in the Vorkuta prison camp in the Northern Urals. He was granted amnesty (from a twenty-five year term), and he has lived in West Germany since 1956. Bienek has won three major German literary awards: Herman Kesten Prize (1975), Wilhelm Raabe Prize (1980) and the Nelly Sachs Award (1981). His novel 'The First Polka' (Der Erste Polka) is the first novel in his Gleiwitz Suite tetralogy; it was the basis of the film of the same name, released in 1979, shown at the 29th Berlin International Film Festival, screenplay by Horst Bienek and Helmut Krapp, directed by Klaus Emmerich, and starring Maria Schell. Covers are quite rubbed at extremities of spine and corners, light foxing on top edge and fore-edge, else a very good copy. First American edition, wrappered issue; first edition thus, first revised English translation of 'Der Erste Polka' by Horst Bienek [first published in German, in 1975, by Carl Hanser Verlag; first published in English, by Gollancz, in 1978, translated by Ralph R. Read; revised translation by Read, published here for the first time by Fjord Press]. Bookseller Inventory # 79985
