About this Item

1933 1st edition. 8vo (140 x 220mm). Pp213. Three colour plates by the author, b/w photographs. Green cloth with black illustration. Spine faded & worn, boards bowed, good. Lacks dust-wrapper.* John Dalzell Kenworthy was an artist who was born and died at Whitehaven, Cumberland. He lived at St. Bees in the same county, where he was the postmaster. He painted in England, Scotland and France, in which places he also fished. This book is a volume of his angling thoughts and reminiscences, largely about Scottish salmon and loch trout fishing, although he does make a detour to the French Mediterranean coast. The painting opposite p191 shows the ghillie pulling his boat up the beach whilst his angler - presumably Kenworthy - sits ignoring him with a glass in his hand. The caption reads, 'A Well Earned Drink.' * This copy is inscribed by the author on the front fep; "To Mrs Mallaby with the author's compliments. J.D. Kenworthy Oct. 1937." Mrs Mallaby is presumably a relation, though not the wife, of George Mallaby, soldier, diplomat and later Sir Howard "George" Charles Mallaby, KCMG, OBE. Mallaby was the headmaster of St. Bees School between 1935 and 1938. Bookseller Inventory # 25579
