About this Item

(1926) 2005 1st English edition. Pp199. B/w illustrations by John Richardson. Green decorated cloth, silk marker. Mint new copy. First published as La Boite a Peche, Bernard Grasset, Paris 1926. Fishing on the Loire, by one of France's most notable modern authors. The author, Maurice Genevoix, was born and brought up on the Loire, almost literally so. He was born on an island in the river and spent much of his childhood and youth fishing. This period of Genevoix's life was terminated abruptly by the First World War. At the conclusion of hostilities, Genevoix wrote a five-volume war memoir entitled Ceux de 14 ("Those from 1914"), a work of comparable importance to such books as Good-Bye To All That, or All Quiet on The Western Front. "Ceux de 14" was followed soon after by the Fishing Box. This, his eighth book, sees Genevoix reacquainting himself with his pre-war self and life, and laying the ghost(s) of the war. "The Fishing Box brings you into a secret world, .of colour, smell and warmth. [The author] recalls his memories, his vivid impressions .of fishing and fishermen [giving as well] an exposition of his technique. The masterpiece of French fishing literature which has nourished thousands of fishing careers". One of the great works of twentieth-century European literature. Chapters include: Bleak; Roach; Chub; Pike; From the top of the bridge; On the snide; Kitchen devil; Dramas; The great net; The frog man; The square dip-nets; The shoal of Suetes [also called le hotu, in English, nase]; The fishing match; Patience; Mystic; Orthodoxy; Anarchy; Closing. ". . . easily the best fishing book I've read in ten years." - Chris Yates. . Bookseller Inventory # 13724
